Artist Statement
I love taking pictures. I try to look beyond the objects and use their shapes, color, light and shadows to create an emotional reaction. I don’t go out with a preconceived notion of what the photograph should be. I let the subject come to me and define the shot. Hopefully this ensures that my work will be fresh and takes full advantage of what the subject has to offer that day. I try to be prepared at any moment to capture what moves me.
These images are my efforts to capture scenes from unusual angles. Particularly with the drone I am able to elevate the point of view and create lights and shadows you don't normally see. I hope you enjoy them.
Drone Photography
Drones can be used to create beautiful and interesting fine art, but they can also be used for more utilitarian purposes. Indie filmmakers can access shots only available to blockbuster movies. News agencies can gather information without the expense of a helicopter. Farmers can use them to see if areas of a field need water. First-responders can use them to search for people or view dangerous situations from above. Contractors and building inspectors can use them to view tall structures or buildings to check for problems. Realtors can get nice promotional overhead shots. The possibilities are endless.
Biography
I recently retired from my job with Yolo County as the Director of Child Support Services. I have been an attorney for 32 years, a car mechanic before that and during law school, but a photography buff my whole life. My first camera was a Kodak bellows variety in the late 1950’s. Later I developed my own pictures in my dark room (a real room, not the program). I am a freelance photographer now, occasionally submitting pictures to galleries and newspapers. I use Canon Digital cameras for terrestrial shots. However, my most recent tool is a DJI Phantom 2 Vision flying camera (a drone).
